The history of the land runs deep. Ten to fifteen thousand years ago the climate was much cooler and the area would have been made up of grassy plains roamed by mammoth, mastodon, horses and bison. When the golf course was originally constructed in 1969, bones and artifacts from mastodon were discovered dating back 10 thousand years.
As climates warmed, mastodon and bison were replaced by deer and squirrel. Two thousand years ago Snee Farm would have been controlled by the Seewee Indians who were allied with the Kiawah and Wando tribes when the English arrived.
In 1698, King William III of England granted the land to Nathaniel Law who later donated the land to Christ Church. Over the years the land changed owners a number of times. Colonel Charles Pinckney received the land in 1754. George Washington ate breakfast at Snee Farm under a huge oak in 1791. The land was purchased at one point in the early 1800s for as little as $3,150 and $15,000 in the early 1900s. In 1966, Snee Farm Golf Club purchased the property with the exception of the 28 acres surrounding the historic house, which is now designated as a national park. Snee Farm as we know it today began to be developed in the early to mid 70s.
